Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest social and charitable organisations, with roots tracing back to medieval stonemasons who built our castles and cathedrals. The United Grand Lodge of England was founded in 1717 and today has around 180,000 members across England and Wales. Worldwide, there are approximately six million Freemasons.

The only "secrets" are the traditional methods of recognition that members use to identify themselves as Freemasons - a tradition dating back centuries when travelling stonemasons needed to prove their credentials. Our principles, values, and activities are entirely open and publicly available.

No. Freemasonry is not a religion and has no theological doctrine. While members are required to believe in a Supreme Being, this is deliberately inclusive language that requires no specific religious practice. Discussion of religion and politics is not permitted in Lodge meetings to ensure harmony and respect among members of all faiths and backgrounds.

A Lodge meeting consists of two parts. The first involves administrative business and ceremonies - formal, symbolic plays using ancient stonemasons' customs and tools to teach moral lessons. Members progress through three degrees: Entered Apprentice (emphasising equality), Fellowcraft (encouraging self-improvement), and Master Mason (teaching the wise use of one's life). The second part is the "Festive Board," a dinner where members socialise and build friendships.

Our regalia provides a symbolic link to Freemasonry's origins. The apron connects us to the protective leather aprons worn by working stonemasons and signifies membership in the fraternity. Other items of regalia indicate an officer's specific role within the Lodge. This ceremonial dress helps create a sense of tradition and equality among members.

Annual Lodge subscriptions average around £200 per year, though this varies between lodges. There is also a one-time initiation fee. Our Lodge meets formally four times a year, with optional Lodges of Instruction for those wishing to develop their ceremonial skills. The time you commit to social or charitable activities is entirely flexible based on your family and work commitments.

The United Grand Lodge of England admits only men aged 18 and over. However, there are two separate women's Grand Lodges - the Order of Women Freemasons and Freemasonry for Women - which operate independently and follow similar traditions.

No. Freemasonry has no political affiliations whatsoever. Discussion of politics is prohibited in Lodge meetings, and the organisation takes no stance on political matters. Members come from all political persuasions and are united by shared values rather than political beliefs.

Freemasonry contributes approximately £52 million to charitable causes each year - nearly £1 million every week - making it one of the largest charitable contributors in the country. The Masonic Charitable Foundation supports causes including medical research, youth welfare, disaster relief, and care for elderly Freemasons and their families.
