Freemasonry in Surrey

Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations.

Our Provincial Structure

The Croydon Lodge of Concord operates under the Provincial Grand Lodge of Surrey, which has coordinated Freemasonry across the county since 1837. Our Province is governed by the United Grand Lodge of England, the world's oldest Grand Lodge with approximately 180,000 members.

This structure ensures standards are maintained while providing a framework for charity and fellowship that extends from our local community to the national level. Worldwide, there are an estimated six million Freemasons.

A History Spanning Centuries

Freemasonry's roots trace back to the medieval stonemasons who built Europe's great castles and cathedrals. These skilled craftsmen formed guilds to protect their trade secrets and support one another.

The transformation from operative to speculative Freemasonry began in the 17th century, with Elias Ashmole's initiation in 1646 being the earliest recorded.

In 1717, four London lodges formed the first Grand Lodge in the world - now known as the United Grand Lodge of England.
